At Substrakt I've been working with Rare, the games designer that produces Kinect sports, as well as legendary titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark, on the interiors of their Birmingham and Twycross offices. Rare opened a new testing and production facility in Fazeley Studios last year and soon became our neighbours. With their 10,000 sq ft office space and the 25th anniversary rebrand they were keen to implement their new look.

Using a pattern of simple graphic shapes with bright hues we mapped out a series of locations for the designs that flowed around the interesting shapes of the studio space. During the project we were invited to Twycross to revamp their reception area. Working alongside the Assistant Art Manager at Rare we produced large scale wall graphics and implemented the new identity in the space.

At Substrakt we launched a new site for newly established architects K4. To coincide with this they asked us to design their VIP invites. My approach was a typographic direction using metallic embossed foil in the same accent as the site on 540gsm Pristine White Colorplan.

Ammo Magazine is a lovely A6 printed publication made up of talented artists and studios. It has an incredible reputation in the illustration world and I was delighted to contribute to the recent issue as one of the four interviewed artists. Issue 6 is now available to buy online with surreal cover artwork by Gabriella Barouch. I was invited by Ammo Magazine to be interviewed for the recent issue. Thanks to Ammo for the photos! You can read the interview below:

Does your day job provide many opportunities to use your illustration skills?
Not as much as I’d like it to… I’m a graphic designer so primarily my work is branding or publication based and time can be quite restricting with budgets too. However, over the past 2 years we’ve really steered the direction of the clients we work with and I can proudly say its great to work with creatively-led organisations. So who knows... ask me again in another 2 years!

Your portfolio includes a selection of accomplished brand based output. How do you approach such projects?
Research, research, research. It’s also so important to gain a thorough understanding of the company, it’s competitors and market. When I worked on the Platform (London bar & restaurant) brand I had several ideas just from the name, exploring the design of London transport systems, black and white brickwork and the humanist typefaces.

You represented Ammo Magazine at YarnFEST in London earlier this year. As part of the event you had to create a live illustration based on Hanif Kureishi’s Buddha of Suburbia'. Was it an enjoyable experience?
Yes! It was probably one of the fastest and scariest 20 minutes of my life though. The author was there with Jon Gray and Faber & Faber too. I read the 280something page book in 4 days though to help my confidence and I got to meet the talented illustrators Jamie Littler, Robin Boyden & The Hidden Dingbat Collective which was lovely too.

As an active member of Birmingham's creative community you've taken part in events including The Creative Careers Festival & B-Hive, both of which focus on young creatives. Do you think there is enough support for those interested in pursuing a creative career?
B-hive was a great opportunity for students to get their work recognised by the industry. We gave feedback and advice to each individual, which is so valuable. They hope to widen it further than Birmingham, it’s so difficult gaining any experience as a student/ graduate so it really gives them a foot in the door. Creative Careers Festival opened up pathways to younger creative’s, explored directions I’d have never of known to exist when I was aged between 13-18. Would be great to see more like this please!

Your unique take on the theme for the 1st Publishers Club zine really impressed us all and earned you a place in the final publication. How did you come up with the idea?
I looked back at the history of totems, their origins, meanings and traditions – discovering their presence in almost every town in Alaska. It became clear and made sense to showcase my illustration in my beloved cake/ all sweet things theme with the dessert coined to honour the American territory in the late 1800’s – Based Alaska! Yummy.

There are some beautiful examples of illustration in your portfolio. Do you feel like you have enough time to focus on personal projects whilst being employed full time?
My mum often tells me I live life in the fast lane, I tend to rarely stop but I kinda like that. As a creative, I get bored quite easily so I’m always looking for the next project to get involved in. It can be difficult finding time with a fulltime job but my day role is more mac based and my evening/weekends more moleskine/fine liners so it’s a good balance. Three-day weekends would be nice though…

As a young designer you're at a very early stage in your career, where would you ideally like to see yourself in 10 years time?
Wowzers. I’m not really sure where I see myself in 3 years time so that’s a difficult question. My goals have shuffled so much as I’ve gained experience in the industry but i’d love to be in a bigger city (London…New York…Barcelona…) with my own illustrative design studio working on some real feel-good, rewarding projects. Although i’m not very business orientated so I’d definitely need a partner in crime!

Which artists or designers do you find especially inspiring?
I really admire Barcelona based Hey Studio and their colourful portfolio of illustrations, graphics and impressive typography. For me, it showcases the perfect integration of illustration in design. I’ve always loved the delicate hand drawn details of Pomme Chan’s work too. I’m also quite lucky that I’ve always been surrounded by talented friends, the best source of inspiration! Two of which include Sam Pierpoint and Tiptoe Collective.

Creative Careers Festival organised by Bright Space was a two-day event for 13 – 18 year olds. The creative and cultural sectors offer a multitude of opportunities for interesting careers, although there seems to be a lack of information and guidance out there, therefore these pathways become unclear. The aim of this was to highlight careers in the creative industries offering workshops, demonstrations, seminars and networking opportunities.

On the Friday afternoon I was sat on the Young Creatives Panel in the Hexagon Theatre alongside Emily Jones (Town Hall Symphony Hall), Annabel Clark (Blogger / Flatpack Festival), Courtney Salmon (Music video producer) and Matt Windle (Poet). The aim was to give young people a chance to talk to those who are already working in the creative industries but close to their age group. The panel lasted an hour and we were asked questions about our experience, routes and aspirations for the future. Tips and advice, that as professionals we can often take for granted. Very informal, we shared answers and openly discussed opinions based on our individual experience and journeys. Coming from all different backgrounds it was a great insight to hear about all the amazing stuff happening in Birmingham and it reinforced how important it is for us all to work together and collaborate as young creatives.

I was invited to take part in Cover Wars at Yarnfest on Friday 21st February @ The Queen of Hoxton to represent Ammo Magazine. I battled it out in creating a cover for Hanif Kureishi’s Buddha of Suburbia against four talented individuals! Representing Ammo magazine I was in the first round against Jamie Littler, representing Soupa. It was the fastest 20 minutes of our life. Pens vs paint. Hanif read out sections of the book in the first half too, then it was judged by the Hanif, Jon Gray and Miriam Rosenbloom (Faber). Next up were Lauren and Phil from Hidden Dingbat against Robyn Boyden. The winner from each round (jamie and hidden dingbat) entered a grand finale of pin the tale on the donkey! Muchas fun all round and congratulations to Hidden Dingbats who won the show!

Was a great night and lovely to meet my fellow illustrators, Jo from Soupa, Hanif Kureshi and the judges :) top stuff!

Define is a new planning and design practice established by former Capita Lovejoy directors Mark Rose and Andy Williams. They have a simple ambition: to pursue the art of place-shaping through our Town Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture expertise.

In our first workshop we were asked to develop a name for Mark and Andy’s new venture. We brainstormed and looked at their background, skills, target audience and values as a practice. Design, development, delivery, derive, detail, depth were a few of the key words we came across – all beginning with De. We found the prefix De is often used to indicate removal or separation that we felt was quite appropriate to this new company - branching off from Capita. We explored various visual directions and felt that hyphenating the De could be a strong asset to the visual identity, following with some of the above key words across various media. During development we were drawn towards the name Define: “To determine with precision; to mark out with distinctness to ascertain or exhibit clearly”. We explored the colon mark as it often follows the word Define preceding a definition, set as two equal circles it lent itself to an interesting abstract element that could be implemented across the identity in a bold yet simple visual way.
